Fluid Festival

Very early this morning (around 2:30 am), Isaac T. woke up and put down about 4 ounces of milk in 7 minutes. He immediately went back to sleep.

Then, around 6:00am, he re-awakened.
I began to feed him, when there was a giant blowout in his rear section. I should have seen it coming, as he spent the last few hours in a very turbulent sleep state.
Just as soon as he resumed eating after the rear end blowout, I felt some seepage. I quickly recognized that the poop was now coming out both sides of his diaper, out his pajamas and onto me.
We jumped up for a quick change.

After everything was cleaned up, I picked the boy up, and scooped up all the dirty laundry. As I did, he squirmed a little and I squeezed him tight to me. He let out a loud (what I thought was a) burp. Suddenly, that old familiar seepage feeling hit me again. This time, it was on my left shoulder. The boy threw up quite a bit all over me. (You were wondering why I mentioned the 2:30 4oz 7 minute feeding -- well, this is it).

Anyhow, this was how I started my day. Fun times.

In between sales

I'm in between baby consignment clothes sales.

I hit the Lewisville UMC sale this morning. I scored some bigger pj's for the growing boy, some blocks, a couple of shirts and an extra Baby Bjorn (so Derek can have one fitted to him and I can have one fitted to me and we don't have to mess with the straps, because they're quite confusing).

The place was PACKED OUT. I got there at 8:00 (the time it started) and had to park way down the street. I think my house was closer than where I parked.
Inside, it was insanity. There were so many moms and giant strollers and babies and toddlers and little kids. I waited in line with my items for over a half hour.

Now, I'm waiting for Ryan and Gloria to come over, so we can shop at the Waterford sale. Hopefully, there's some good stuff left. It ends in an hour.

Also: I love the weekend!!!

1st Day

it's actually the second day, but i'm writing to update how the first day back went.

um, i don't want to be back. it's hectic. i have to find time to "get" isaac's food twice a day. anyone with any knowledge of teaching knows that it's not easy to find 20-25 minutes in your day. much less, twice.

i don't even know why i'm spending time typing this.

the kids are good. i had to yell at them today. i think they are still on substitute teacher coast mode. that, combined with a little senioritis, and some chippy attitudes doesn't make for a fun day.

i was so glad to get the boy yesterday. i wanted to play with him more, but he was grumpy and wanted to sleep. but, not enough to go to sleep. just enough to be grumpy.

he did, however, have an excellent night last night. he slept from 9 until 2:15 and then from 3:00 until 5:30. I fed him a little at 5:30 and then he went back to sleep until about 7:00. hopefully, this is a sign that things are going to start to get better?

that's all. back to work. bleh.

What I did on my maternity vacation....

It's back to school for me tomorrow.
I'm dreading it.

I can't believe it's been six weeks since Isaac was born. It feels like yesterday that we were thrust into our whirlwind adventure of child delivering. But, then again, it seems like 100 years ago that I had my first sleepless night. It seems like way longer than six weeks when I remember all the times I held the inconsolable monster boy while he screamed his little heart out.

I don't know how things will go tomorrow. I know I'll have never been in more a hurry to get out of there than I will be tomorrow. Did that sentence make any sense?

In other news, I had my six week checkup visit. Things are back to normal. Blood pressure and healing and stuff. My weight isn't quite normal, but it's back in the 100's (instead of the 200's!)

Well, I guess I should attend to any last minute details of getting ready and get some sleep so I can be raring to go in the morning. Bleh.

Ask Calvin's Dad

Calvin's dad answering questions, quoted from various Calvin and Hobbes books by Bill Watterson.

Q. Why does the sun set?
A. It's because hot air rises. The sun's hot in the middle of the day, so it rises high in the sky. In the evening then, it cools down and sets.
Q. Why does it go from east to west?
A. Solar wind.

Q. Why does the sky turn red as the sun sets?
A. That's all the oxygen in the atmosphere catching fire.
Q. Where does the sun go when it sets?
A. The sun sets in the west. In Arizona actually, near Flagstaff. That's why the rocks there are so red.
Q. Don't the people get burned up?
A. No, the sun goes out as it sets. That's why it's dark at night.
Q. Doesn't the sun crush the whole state as it lands?
A. Ha ha, of course not. Hold a quarter up. See, the sun's just about the same size.
Q. I thought I read that the sun was really big.
A. You can't believe everything you read, I'm afraid.
Q. How come old photographs are always black and white? Didn't they have color film back then?
A. Sure they did. In fact, those old photographs are in color. It's just that the world was black and white then. The world didn't turn color until sometime in the 1930s, and it was pretty grainy color for a while, too.
Q. But then why are old paintings in color?! If the world was black and white, wouldn't artists have painted it that way?
A. Not necessarily. A lot of great artists were insane.
Q. But... But how could they have painted in color anyway? Wouldn't their paints have been shades of gray back then?
A. Of course, but they turned colors like everything else did in the '30s.
Q. So why didn't old black and white photos turn color too?
A. Because they were color pictures of black and white, remember?

Q. Dad, will you explain the theory of relativity to me? I don't understand why time goes slower at great speed.
A. It's because you keep changing time zones. See, if you fly to California, you gain three hours on a five-hour flight, right? So if you go at the speed of light, you gain more time, because it doesn't take as long to get there. Of course, the theory of relativity only works if you're going west.

Q. Why do my eyes shut when I sneeze?
A. If your lids weren't closed, the force of the explosion would blow your eyeballs out and stretch the optic nerve, so your eyes would flop around and you'd have to point them with your hands to see anything.

Q. How do bank machines work?
A. Well, let's say you want 25 dollars. You punch in the amount and behind the machine there's a guy with a printing press who makes the money and sticks it out this slot.
Q. Sort of like the guy who lives up in our garage and opens the door?
A. Exactly.

Q. What causes the wind?
A. Trees sneezing.

Q. Why does ice float?
A. Because it's cold. Ice wants to get warm, so it goes to the top of liquids to be nearer to the sun.
Q. Is that true?
A. Look it up and find out.
Q. I should just look up stuff in the first place.

Q. How come you know so much?
A. It's all in the book you get when you become a father.

Not-So-Happy Rest of the Day

After I took the video of the super cute boy this morning, he proceeded to have a monsterific rest of the day. He was fussy and grumpy all morning and I couldn't get him to sleep for more than 15 minutes at a time - and that was only 2 or 3 times.

Then, we went to the mall to have a play-date with Lorena and Josiah. He screamed all the way there. I wondered what in the world I was even thinking. But, when we got there, he ate a big full bottle and slept cozily in the Baby Bjorn while we walked around for an hour or so. He woke up and was a little grumbly as we left, but all in all, the trip to the mall would prove to be the highlight of our day.

When we got home, it was a scream festival. I would change him into a dry diaper, feed him, burp him, walk with him, change positions, walk some more, put him in the swing, put him on the floor, walk some more, try feeding some more, put the pacifier in, walk some more, play and talk to him, get a clean diaper, try some more food, try the swing, ... still screaming. I nearly put him up for adoption this afternoon. Then, miraculously, around 4:30, he put his head down and fell asleep. So, I guess it wasn't that bad. It feels longer than it really is when he's screaming.

I think he's being like this as a defense mechanism because he's mad that I'll be going back to school on Wednesday. Hopefully, we'll have a good last day tomorrow.

Church Attempt #2

I took Isaac to church today.
We tried to take him a couple weeks back, but he was miserable, I was getting sick and we wound up leaving early.

This time around, we made it through the music and about 15 minutes of the teaching, but then he whined and stirred and I made a quick escape to the nursery. He was very good in the nursery. We rocked and listened to all the other babies crying and to the various sounds and music coming from the toddler room. I knew he was hungry, so we went back to the foyer and ate some. Then, the boy nodded off.
So, we didn't get the whole church experience, but we made it through the hour and half.

It was all worth it, since he got to wear this sweet outfit before he grows right out of it:

Ultra Busy Day

We had an exceptionally busy day today.
First of all, some friends (pregnant friends) came over to visit the monster and chat. Then, we decided to go to lunch at Jason's Deli. Taking the boy out to eat is quite an endeavor. After the lovely lunch, we went to Babies R Us to pick up some essentials. We were also on the hunt for a birthday gift for Caison (nephew), but there was nothing for 2 year old boys at Babies R Us. So, off to Target we went. We scored some Legos for the nephew and headed home.
At this point, Isaac wasn't very cheery. He was sleepy and hungry and grumpy. We went home long enough for a feeding and a short nap before we dragged him back out. This time, we were off to Caison's party.

While we were there, he ate a little and then got passed around a number of times (while he snoozed away).

When we got home, he zonked out for a couple of hours. Finally I woke him up (or he'd have slept all evening) and fed him. He ate like a champ! We got online and had a video conference with my Mom and Terry, so they could see the monster. Then a bath. Now he's fast asleep again. Hopefully for a long while.

We snapped this smiley picture during a diaper change. He was in a good mood, so we grabbed the camera.

Stay-At-Home Mom Mayhem

After school today, I picked up Isaac from Jena's. She said he had slept all morning and he seemed to be done eating, so I figured we should stop at the New Philadelphia Moravian Church's Baby Clothing Sale.
It was madness!
There will like 700 stay-at-home moms who all had the same idea as me. I strapped Isaac in the Baby Bjorn so I wouldn't set him down somewhere and forget him. Then we shopped for some cute new clothes.
I didn't get much. The place was picked pretty clean by the time we got there (1 hour after it started). There were strollers adorned with stacks of second hand clothes everywhere. There was a whole lot of screaming babies (not my angel, of course -- he slept).
Derek's sister was there, and already in the (ginormous) line, so I handed her my handful of clothes and made a quick exit.

Now we're home. The monster is swaying from side to side in his swing, looking at the moving fish mobile and the ceiling fan. He likes the fan because it's black and the ceiling is white, providing high contrast for developing eyeballs. Baby Mozart is on repeat in the background and we're going to have a relaxing afternoon. That's my plan anyways. His is probably a little different.

First Clothing Casualty

This picture is old. I may have even posted it on this blog before.

But, you see, it is the only picture I have of Isaac in this outfit. And, unless you want him to wear it off his shoulders 80's (Cyndi Lauper) style, then it will remain the only picture.

He's growing like a weed.
Knowing this, I decided to get some of his newborn stuff into the rotation a little more often, so I dug up the "baby" sleeper that my Calculus class bought for the boy. I got his feet and one arm in, but when I tried the other arm, it was clear that it would be very snug. Then, he kicked his legs out in a fit of rage (he despises nakedness), and his little shoulders were exposed.

I was both sad and glad.
Sad, because it's pretty much my favorite outfit.
Glad, because he's growing and getting easier. I'm not cut out for this fragile-newborn-baby parenting business. I think I'll start with a used toddler next time.
I'll never "buy" new again....
