I have been brainstorming a while about this knowing our day is nearing as well. My first thought was a screen door with a large rock on it circa my hamster-owning days. Chicken wire is an affordable option. A moat is an oldie but a goody.
Jonathan made the switch to the big boy bed this weekend. It went rather smoothly. He fell out a couple of times but stayed in his room and on his bed. I was really proud of him.

I think the fall at the park was intentional practice. Just build a lid for the top of the crib.
