sat. a.m. @ the playground

isaac and i sped off to the playground this morning for some action and adventure. our trip was cut short by an unexpected diaper filling, but while we were there, we enjoyed some fun on the swings...

poolside

we had our first trip (this summer) to the pool today. a real pool. not the kiddie pool in the backyard.

isaac wasn't really too interested in going in, but in his defense, it was still pretty chilly. he preferred to throw all of the toy into the pool, instead. he did have an unplanned dip, when he got to close the edge and wasn't watching where he was going. luckily, i was close by and only a few gulps of water were taken in before i plucked him from the 12 inches of treacherous waters.

after his rough morning (aside from falling into the pool, he started off his morning by getting his leg stuck in the crib, and then rubbing sunblock into his eyes before we even got to the pool), he fell fast asleep on the 2 minute ride home and slept peacefully all afternoon. as did i. :)

lawn destruction

for a long time, we've been planning on taking out a row of leland cypresses and turning a huge crab grass infested natural area into grass. while i was out yesterday, derek grabbed the chain saw and started in. eight giant leland cypresses, several crape myrtles and a holly tree are now hacked up all over the yard and dying a slow death.

there's still so much to be done, but here's the current status...

clown cake

here's the cake i made at my cake decorating class tonight.
chock full of clowns, it is.

a day in the life of isaac

today...

1. isaac went breakfast-less. not because i won't feed him, but because he wouldn't eat. not even a mound of cheerios on the floor.

2. i put him down for his morning "rest" (he doesn't actually sleep, he just rests for about 45 minutes in his crib). he fell fast asleep for 2 hours.

3. when he awakened, he was quite cheerful. he even ate a wee little bit of lunch. then, he began to pluck his morsels of food from his tray and put them on the floor. each time, i told him no and gave him a little hand "thump". after a few, i thought he would give up and possibly have a meltdown. nope. he just put the food on the floor, held his hand out for me to thump, winced, and then laughed. repeat. after about 7 or 8, he stopped. but because he wanted to, not because i was making him. :)

4. we played in and around the house in the afternoon. i hoped for a second nap, since the morning rest/nap was pretty early and it would make for a long evening w/o another nap. it didn't happen.

5. around dinnertime, i went into the kitchen, where he had been playing quietly (always a bad sign), to discover that he had pulled every possible loose item out of all the cabinets and drawers and was working on putting all of our silverware into the garbage. we have a latch on the garbage cabinet, but it still allows the door to open just wide enough for a little man's arm to squeeze through.

6. he went to bed at 7:00ish. apparently he suffered from some meltdowns after derek put more latches on the cabinets and drawers.

it was a busy day for the boy and the mom.

baby liam's cake

below, you will find two pictures of the cake i made for chris's baby shower, which i attended late this morning. we (lorena and i) tried desperately to match the colors of chris's chosen "theme", and i think we came relatively close. we had a lot of fun making the cake, too. and isaac and josiah had a lot of fun playing with each other, in between bouts of not sharing and whining. :)

the cake had a slight fender bender this morning, but since lorena won't email me the picture we took yesterday, the dinged up cake is the only shot i've got. anyhow, without further ado...

five years ago today...

...derek and i got hitched.

it doesn't seem like 5 years ago. unless i really think about all that has taken place. then, i suppose it seems a little longer. anyhow, i'm posting a slideshow of our wedding day, for those of you that are convinced i've never worn a dress....

belly scratching, by dad.

sometimes, we can get the boy to sit still for a couple minutes by scratching his belly. but, let my be clear, it's only a couple minutes max.

how big?

so big!

two cakes

these are the two most recent cakes i've made.

this is one i made for brie's shower. it's a devil's food cake, with chocolate ganache filling and chocolate buttercream icing. learning to make roses has taken up a large chunk of my life.

this is pooh. i'm taking a decorating class and our first cake was a "character cake". i'm not really a pooh fan at all, but i borrowed a pan from lora, so i wouldn't be stuck with a character cake pan that i would never use again.

monster.

my normally independent and happy boy is gone.
he has been replaced by a clingy, frustrated, shrieking, tantrum throwing boy.

i feel tied to him like i did in the first three (miserable) months.
what gives?

playroom

we've finally gotten our downstairs in good enough shape to take on the form of a playroom for the boy. his toys were getting too big, both in size and quantity, to occupy the living room any longer. we split the basement into two areas, an office and a playroom. the playroom has couches and an entertainment center, so it can double as a playroom for grownups, as well.

anyhow, isaac loves it.

we're ok!

today i got a call today from a long distance friend who thought my lapse in blogging was an indication that something was awry in the lidbom house.

never fear long distance blog stalkers. all is well around here. it's just been busy and boring all at once. see you soon.
