So, here's some shots of the boy and his rash. It doesn't really seem to be bothering him too much. He's crabby, but I don't know if that's from the rash, or the cough he's had, or the lack of sleep we've suffered from lately. The doctor didn't seem too worried about him, and thinks that the rash will run it's course and he'll be fine. And we got a prescription for little man cough syrup. Anyhow, without further ado:

the saga continues
my poor little man has been some sort of sick for quite a while now.
as i previously mentioned, he had a cold. it went away. then another cold moved into the vacancy. this cold turned into a pretty rough cough. i was planning on calling the doc this morning, should the cough not be any better. then the boy upped the ante. he awakened this morning, covered head to toe in a nice, red, bumpy rash. the actual rash didn't seem to bother him, but he was quite cranky this morning (he's already back down for a nap).
anyhow, we're heading to the doctor's office at 10:00 to find out what ails the little man. :(

these are a few of my favorite things...
The boy has a zillion toys. They are like bacteria and they keep multiplying, slowly taking over our house. However, about 75% of the time, Isaac can be found playing with his Stack & Roll Cups.
They are awesome. They nest and stack and, if you take any two adjacent cups, can connect to make a ball (hence the "roll"). Isaac likes to put things under them and then check to see if said thing is still there. Over and over and over. He likes to stick his thumb down the hole and see how many cups he can pick up at one time. In the kitchen, he likes to throw them for sound effects. He loves loves loves them. And because he loves them, I too, love them.

It's my party and I'll cry if I want to!
We had Isaac's birthday party last night. It went pretty well. It was all of his NC family. He wasn't really interested in very much of the birthday type activities. He mostly just wanted to play with Caison.
He sat totally still during "Happy Birthday to You" and then tried to exstiguish the candle using his fingers. Actually eating the cake was another story. He wasn't interested in the least. He was obsessed with Caison's sippy cup, so we finally had to get him out and give him a sippy cup of his own (which is funny, because he normally balks at a sippy cup). Anyhow, here's one of the many unhappy cake shots:
Dinner went much better. The boy ate a TON. He even ate some noodles and sauce. Probably about 10 rotinis. He's not a big fan of grownup food. He likes his smashed peas, that's for sure!
He also wasn't too thrilled about opening presents. He did enjoy is Little People Ark, but even more than that, he liked the card that came with it, complete with things to try to rip off:
And this was the toy of the night. It's a nice (noisy) little car, and boy does he love to push around cars!
I don't have time to do it right now, because the little one is banging frantically on his crib, ready to get up, but check back soon at our picasa site and hopefully I'll have more pictures of Isaac's big day.

Mr. Mischief
I'm too lazy to pull the pictures off my camera, so this camera-phone picture will have to do. This is the cake I made for the boy's birthday party. I was going to make Mr. Grumpy, to match his shirt, but I think I like Mr. Mischief better. It suits him much better, too: while we were working on the cakes, Isaac put a car toy into Lorena's toilet - his favorite pastime.
Official Birthday Party Day
Isaac's birthday didn't turn out to be such a wonderful day for him. He had shots at the doctor's for his 12 month checkup and didn't have a very good evening from that point on. Luckily, he obviously had no idea that it was his birthday and I "ruined" it, by scheduling an appointment for shots on the very day that I should not have.
He also got a haircut yesterday and looks like a little boy. Unfortunately, I still do not have pictures of this haircut, due to the ensuing doctor's appointment meltdown evening....
So, the party was planned for tonight for three reasons:
1. the aforementioned shots
2. friday cake day volume III
3. i tutor on thursday nights
So, I'm off, in a little bit, to Lorena's, where we'll be designing and implementing Isaac's birthday cake plan. We are also making cupcakes for the little ones who get dragged to Lorena's house every friday!
Isaac's party will be tonight. I'll take lots of pictures.... Never fear!
We're having spaghetti with meatballs and italian sausage. The perfect first birthday dinner!

one year ago today...
....was the last day of freedom that i would know.
(he turns one tomorrow.)
there's not much to report from the lidbom camp these days. isaac is currently lying in bed, alternating crying, playing, and yelling momomomom. he's really trying hard not to sleep. perhaps he's having a throwback to the olden days of little sleep. i don't know what to do with him.
he's also been not eating, as of late. for example, this morning, he ate about 15 cheerios for breakfast (and a stray piece of dogfood). last night, he ate approximately 4 bites of baby food, before calling it quits. again, i don't know what to do with him.
in other news, derek bought a steam cleaner for the carpets, and we know have a stripe down the living room floor - on one side, there's nice, clean, fluffy carpet, and on the other side is dirty, matted down, yucky carpet. we'll finish the task soon. i hope.
finally, i would like to take this time to state that i hate the new england patriots and i would love nothing more than to see them taken down by slack-jawed eli manning and the ny giants, causing their perfect* season to be all in vain.

PJ's Party
Derek and Isaac went to PJ's birthday party without me yesterday, due to my recently acquired cold. I posted all the pictures and videos here. They had a great time, and Isaac was worn out when he got home. Derek took this shot in the car on the ride home:

Friday Cakeday Volume II
Today was our second round of making cakes.
We made a firetruck for PJ's birthday tomorrow. PJ's mom just thinks we used a flat cake mold to make the cake, so hopefully she likes this...
This is a shot of Lorena doing the not-so-fun crumb coat.
Here's me, applying some of the star outercoat (we did stars due to the difficulty of the crumb coat).
And, the finished product.

forrest gump
my boy is like forrest gump.
how so, you ask?
let me quote.
"from that day on, if i was going anywhere, i was running (pronounced: runnang)"
i hope that is the only likeness to forrest gump that we find.

two becomes one
naps, that is.
i think it is over. my world of two, rock solid, 1.5 hour naps per day. lately, isaac has been staying awake for a very long time after i put him down for a nap or bed. which means when he does fall asleep, he wakes up way later. which means, nap #2 is later, and then bedtime ends up even later (see last post)...
so, today, we're trying the one nap thing. he woke up at 8:30. went down for a nap at 12:30 (and fell RIGHT asleep) and is still napping as i type (2:30).
we'll see how it goes...
and it's going to take a big adjustment on my part to get used to one naps worth of recovery each day.

just an update because i'm bored...
...i don't really have anything to say. it's been quite uneventful around these parts.
let's see...
isaac is yapping away in his crib, trying not to start his nap. he likes to procrastinate, making it hard to schedule anything these days. i like when he takes so long to get to sleep that by the time he wakes up from his nap it's bedtime. only he's not tired. on nights that i tutor, i'm sure derek loves that, too.
we just took a walk, during which mr. isaac t. decided that he was done riding in the stroller about 5 minutes from home. i think the snot on his face and the cold weather weren't agreeing. so i carried him the rest of the way (uphill) (with lucy pulling the leash) (and pushing the stroller with whatever arm wasn't holding a 23 pound baby-zilla).
what else?
ok. after our super fun cake making expo last friday, we've decided to do it every friday. this friday we'll be making a firetruck cake for pj. next friday, we'll be making isaac's cake. (note: i am now taking suggestions for the theme of isaac's cake). the friday after that, we'll be tasked with making a cake for the newly arrived olivia f. after that, we have openings. so, rachel, maybe....
ummmmmm.... (this is a serious one)
i'm desperately trying to decide what to do next year as far as school vs. staying home goes. on some days, i can't even fathom staying home for another year. on all days, i hate the thought of leaving the boy. i miss teaching. mostly the kids. not really the grownups. or even the math. just being in that environment. i'm so incredibly torn. and i have to tell my school what i plan to do by april 1st, or i don't get to go back. well, i guess maybe i could. but, until april 1st, it's guaranteed. anyhooo... that's what's been plaguing most of my waking thoughts for the last month or so.
well, it seems that the boy hasn't made any peeps in the last few minutes, so maybe he's nodded off. that means: i can a) get something done, b) take a nap myself, c) shower after having carried the boy, dog and stroller uphill for five whole whopping minutes or d) surf the internets.
hmmm.....decisions, decisions.

Queens of Cakes
For Heather's shower, Lorena, Chris and I had the grand plan to make a cake with fondant. Actually, Lorena had the grand plan. Chris and I just nodded and went along with it. I guess we watch too much Ace of Cakes and they make it look so easy, so we thought we'd try our hand at the art of cake decorating.
Lorena baked the 4 layers of delicious cake last night and had the butter cream finished and the fondant started by the time we got there. It should also be noted that Amy came over to Lorena's, to watch Isaac, Josiah and Grace, along with her own two sweet girls. It was toddler-mania!
Anyhow, the rest of the process is sporadically documented by pictures, which I will now display below.
Lorena and Chris, piping a border of circles:
Rolling, dying and cutting fondant:
A giant vat of butter cream!:
The supplies, ready for decorating:
The kids, eating lunch, looking quite cute:
The finished (except for piping some words) product:

That is what is all over the boy's face today. He's getting something and I'm gearing up for a long couple of days.

72 degrees
Isaac and I took advantage of yesterday's mild temperatures and went outside for a romp in the backyard. Most of the shots I got were of Isaac trying to gather up all of Lucy's frisbees or of his back as he ran away from me. He's tough to get a good shot of these days. Our backyard slopes downward from the house, so he kept winding up at the fence. Anyhow, this was his first time running around freely in the yard. When he still crawled, he would just eat all the leaves he could find. Now that he's walking, those leaves don't even tempt him.

the boy and the dog
Two things surprise me about the following pictures.
1. Lucy remained on the couch, despite the fact that not only was Isaac on the couch with her, but he was also kicking her.
2. Lucy remained on the couch while I took pictures. You see, like most everything else, she's scared of the camera and usually bolts upstairs upon hearing the dreaded chime of the camera being turned on.

shopping trip
so this....
...is my favorite outfit that Isaac owns. if it's clean, he's usually wearing it. i was getting pretty sad, because it's getting quite "cozy" in the between the legs area. we looked and looked online for a replacement in the next size, to no avail.
yesterday, we went to the outlets at concord mills and lo and behold there were a few (like 3 or 4) replacements in the next size. i purchased a gray one and a green one. the green one is fleece and it's a little lighter, so maybe it can last into the spring? i can only hope.
sadly, after this, i think it's on to "big boy" clothes only. :(

today's cute boy.
i took these shots as the boy vegged out to baby einstein this morning.
he's learning to drink a bottle on his own, a skill that i fear i may have inadvertently stunted. i so enjoyed the four times a day when he would sit still for five whole minutes and let me hold him while he drank his bottle.
obligatory semi-artistic shot with weird angle:

cold weather = sweet hats
or sweet tuuks as we called them in the blustery parts of upstate ny (to distinguish them from your standard baseball type cap, that is).
anyhow....
here's some shots of our boy, in this style from old navy, purchased by gramma lidbom:
just home from grocery shopping. we were surprised that he was willing to let this hat stay on his head, so we quickly grabbed the camera:
sort of playing patty cake, but definitely wondering what dad is doing over here, with that camera:
this is isaac's favorite toy. and lucy's old favorite toy. and sometimes a shared favorite toy between the two of them. it's an old stuffed monkey:
he can usually be found in this pose, scampering around the house with the monkey dangling close behind.
